COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A rain and snow mix is in the forecast this week. It may mean it’s time to think about winterizing your car.

November is one of Colorado’s snowiest months. It’s bound to bring in business for local tire shops. Dale Kurtz and operates Curtesy Automotive on 8th Street in Colorado Springs. He says there are several measures to take when preparing your car for the winter.

First, there’s the battery to consider.

“Checking the battery is so important because as the temperature drops, everything slows down. Things get harder to turn,” said Dale Kurtz.

It costs anywhere from $15 to $30 to get it checked at an auto shop.

Then, there’s the antifreeze. You can check it at home or with a professional.

Next comes the wiper blades and windshield washer fluid.

“Windshield washer fluid is very critical in order to be able to have a clear view as you’re driving,” added Kurtz.

And there’s the studded tires to think about.

“They grip into the ice. so it helps the vehicle track,” explained Kurtz.

Prices range from $400 to 800, depending on the tire size and car.

“It’s really a personal preference on, you know, if you want to go with the studded tires. there’s pros and cons to both,” said Kurtz.

It only takes a couple of dollars to save you in the long run. Waxing and washing your car is another good idea for winterizing your vehicle – protecting your car from the ice.
