Marriage license demand dying down for same-sex couples in Pueblo County

The rush for marriage licenses for same-sex couples has slowed down in Pueblo County.

So far, the Pueblo County Clerk and Recorder’s Office said two couples have picked up licenses as of Tuesday.

Back in July, Pueblo was one of the first counties to issue same-sex marriage licenses. During that time, the county issued 40 licenses to same-sex couples.

“We weren’t expecting a big crowd, now that the couples can plan to come whenever they like. We expect it to trickle in like normal marriage licenses,” Pueblo County Clerk Gilbert Ortiz said.

On Tuesday, Colorado Attorney General John Suthers ordered all Colorado clerks to start issuing marriage licenses for same-sex couples.

Even though same-sex couples can receive licenses, Rev. Kirsten Barlow of First United Methodist Church in Pueblo is not seeing eye-to-eye with the decision.

“One of the things pastors can be brought up on charges for with the United Methodist Church is performing same-sex marriages,” she said.

Pueblo County first issued licenses on July 11.
