Underdog Dunafon looks to shake-up governor’s race

Glendale Mayor Mike Dunafon is a political outsider who filed to become Colorado’s next governor because of a half-hearted promise he made to a group of friends.

“I told them if i get 60,000 likes on Facebook by my 60th birthday on April 6, I got 74,000 likes,” Dunafon said with a smile. “I was stuck to keep my word.”

Dunafon said voters he meets are fed up with the two party system and his two opponents in November, Gov. John Hickenlooper and former congressman Bob Beauprez can’t hide from the labels next to their name.

“Our lives are being run by typical politicians,” Dunafon said. “Those are narcissistic elitists. We’ve got a handful of people who are disconnected from the nation.”

A lifelong Republican until the end of 2013, this former Bronco, now an Independent is pro-gun, pro-choice and believes marijuana should be decriminalized nationwide.

Dunafon also officiates gay weddings.

“Two people love each other,” Dunafon said, “they’re committed to one another, they’re great citizens in our community. Stay out of their bedroom.”

If elected to lead our state, he would give the order to execute death row inmate Nathan Dunlap.

“Nathan Dunlap showed no remorse,” Dunafon said. “He brutally assassinated the people he was working with who trusted him and he admitted to the murders.”

Former Colorado College political science professor Bob Loevy argues the tight governor’s race does not bode well for Dunafon. The expert believes in a close contest most voters support the two major party candidates because they have the most name recognition.
