Colorado Springs Business Alliance believes army could soon cut thousands of jobs at Fort Carson

The Colorado Springs Regional Business Alliance says the army is eying cuts that could affect the Mountain Post, and there’s something you can do about it.

The group says that the Army is considering reductions at 30 bases, including a reduction of up to 16,000 personnel at Fort Carson.

“Those 16,000 jobs would be $1 billion of economic impact on the community,” Andy Merritt said. “That means every sector of the economy will be impacted. Whether it be a restaurant, a home builder, a physician’s assistant, there going to be impacted.”

The alliance says it wants to get the word out about the potential cuts, so that members of the public will have an opportunity to comment on the issue in the form of an email, letter or postcard.

The alliance, along with El Paso County, is making postcards available at all Clerk and Recorders Offices.

“One way or another the Army is downsizing,” says Steve Dant, Chair of the Business Alliance Military Affairs Council. “Heavy community involvement is required. We need to send a message loud and clear to the Department of the Army how much our areasupports Fort Carson. We need thousands of responses, not hundreds. Right now please get involved and show your support by signing these postcards or sending an email.”

El Paso County Clerk and Recorder Wayne Williams says many residents in the Pikes Peak region view Fort Carson as a historic landmark.

“It’s not just the economic impact,” Williams said. “Many of the people who live in the Pikes Peak region served in the military, had family who did, so Fort Carson is an important symbol of that.”

All letters and postcards that are submitted must be emailed or postmarked by Monday, August 25, 2014.
