Immigrant driver’s license hopefuls jam DMV

Colorado’s Department of Motor Vehicles is scrambling to fix its appointment website after being overwhelmed by noncitizens seeking driver’s licenses.

Non-U.S. citizens were allowed to start making appointments on Tuesday. The DMV says the website to schedule an appointment has averaged 70,000 hits an hour with a high of 107,500 hits hourly.

KMGH reports that the jam is worsened by the fact that only five DMV offices in Colorado that will provide the noncitizen licenses.

A Department of Revenue spokeswoman says the program for noncitizen licenses won’t be issued until Aug. 1 and that July is a preparation month of setting up appointment.

A 2013 law allows those who don’t have a Social Security number to obtain a driver’s license if they live in Colorado.
