Bill addressing youth vaccines advances

Colorado lawmakers advanced a proposal to make it harder to send kids to school without vaccinations.

The state House gave initial approval on a voice vote Friday to require parents to watch a video on the benefits and risks of immunization if they seek an exemption for vaccines for personal reasons.

Colorado is one of 18 states that allow parents and students to opt out of getting required vaccines if they submit a statement of exemption based on religious or personal beliefs.

Under the bill, religious and medical exemptions would not be affected.

Supporters of the bill insist they’re trying to educate parents while preserving choice. But opponents argue the measure chips away at parental control.

The bill still needs a final House vote.
