Trader Joe’s leases space for Colorado Springs store

A California-based grocery store chain that opened its first three Colorado stores in the Denver area last month confirms it is setting its sights on Colorado Springs.

Trader Joe’s says it has leased space for a 12,400 square foot store at University Village Colorado. It will join other large retailers such as Costco and Lowe’s in the shopping center located near N. Nevada Ave. and I-25.

But a store spokesperson confirmed the store won’t sell alcohol. According to Colorado law, chains can only sell alcohol at one location, and a Trader Joe’s in Denver already sells it.

In a news release, Trader Joe’s says the store will feature a “festive dcor that mixes traditional Trader Joe’s elements such ascedar covered walls and Hawaiianmotifs, combined with a local flair that includes art celebrating the neighborhood.”

The chain began in Los Angeles in 1958 and has since expanded to more than 400 locations in 39 states.

The Colorado Springs location will open in 2015, although an exact date has not yet been announced.
