Person of interest in child sex assault case dies

Police are investigating after a man who was a person of interest in a sexual assault on a child was found dead Monday night.

Colorado Springs Police said officers went to contact the man in the area of the 2900 block of Straus Lane around 10:30 Monday night.

Officers learned two other children were with the man inside, police said. Officers then spoke with the man over the phone and he said he would let the two children leave the home.

Police said officers lost contact with him and tried to contact him again, but did not get a hold of him. After several tries, officers went into the home and found the man dead with a single gunshot wound.

An investigation is underway, police said.
