Pueblo woman not guilty in fatal accident

A Pueblo jury took less than an hour to return a not guilty verdict Friday (12/12/13) against a woman charged with hitting and killing a man last year on the East Side.

Connie Romero, 35, was acquitted of one count of careless driving resulting in death after a two-day trial.

Romero was charged with hitting James Dale Boone, 59, on March 19, 2012, as he tried to cross the street at Second Street and Portland Avenue in his wheelchair.

Boone was taken to Parkview Medical Center and treated for his injuries. He died about a week later under private care.

Police reports said Boone was intoxicated when he was crossing the street and Romero was unable to avoid him.

Romero initially left the scene of the accident but then returned.

She faced only the misdemeanor charge of careless driving resulting in death.
