A Colorado Springs student is honored for his swift decision

A Colorado Springs student is rewarded for his swift decision making which saved his dogs and home.

Ten-year-old Kole Swihart was awarded the 911 Hero Award, which is given to youth 16 years old and younger who initiate a 911 call and whose actions save a life, significantly reduce property damage, or lead to the apprehension of a criminal.

Swihart was also honored at his school, Howbert Elementary, with an assembly.

Swihart said on Nov. 5 he smelled smoke and immediately called 911, after that he evacuated his home with his two dogs.

He also has advice for people if they get involved in the same situation.

“If it ever happens, call 911 and just do what you have to do and don’t rescue your dogs if they’re dead scared and that’s where the fire is,” Swihart said.

Swihart was nominated for the 911 Hero Award in November.
