Ski Season Traffic Cams

Colorado highway officials are upgrading traffic alert systems ahead of the ski season, including converting traffic cameras from still photos to video.

The Summit Daily News reported Thursday that 48 of Colorado’s 1,000 traffic cameras have been upgraded so far, including 18 along Interstate 70 between Denver and Glenwood Springs, a route heavily traveled by skiers.

Evergreen-based software company Wowza is working with the Colorado Department of Transportation on the improvements.

Wowza CEO Dave Stubenvoll says the cameras can provide live video via smartphone and tablet apps. They also allow one user at a time to control the picture by zooming in and out at some locations.
