Teenage Monte Vista girl killed in rollover crash

A teenage girl from Monte Vista was killed in a car accident in Rio Grande County Friday night.

The crash happened on Rio Grande County Road 3 East, just north of Rio Grande County Road 5 North.

Troopers say Kaylie Thompson, 16, over-corrected her car and crashed into a utility pole. The car then rolled and crashed into a metal granary.

Thompson was partially thrown from the car and died on scene.

Troopers say Thompson was not wearing a seat belt.

Drugs or alcohol are not suspected. The Colorado State Patrol is investigating whether speed and distracted driving were factors in the crash.

This is the second deadly crash in the San Luis Valley, in the past month, in which the driver was not wearing a seat belt and suffered deadly injuries as a result.
