Inmate who escaped Florence prison camp sentenced

An inmate who escaped from a federal prison camp in Florence and spent almost two decades on the run before being caught has been resentenced.

The Pueblo Chieftain reports U.S. District Judge Wiley Daniel sentenced German Antonio Ocampo-Gutierrez on Wednesday to 18 months in prison for escape. Ocampo-Gutierrez also must serve the remainder of his previous prison term.

He began a 15-year sentence in 1987 for crimes related to having brought 105 pounds of cocaine from Mexico into Texas. Ocampo-Gutierrez, who also was serving a five-year sentence for a violation of bond, walked away from the prison camp in 1993.

The U.S. Border Patrol caught him in November in Texas crossing illegally into the United States. They determined that U.S. marshals in Colorado had an arrest warrant for him.
