Small fire burns near Falcon

Three local fire departments responded to a grass fire Thursday south of the intersection of U.S. 24 and Constitution Avenue.

Authorities arrived just after 4:30 p.m. There was no visible smoke plume. Firefighters said the fire was less than an acre in size, in a valley in the Jimmy Camp Creek Area. The land is owned by Banning Lewis Ranch.

Fire crews had to go through a fence to reach the fire around a quarter-mile south of the highway. The right eastbound lane of the highway was closed during the fire.

Firefighters said several trees were burning in a grassy area, and strong winds raised concern that the flames might spread. However, firefighters said they expected to have the fire out soon with no threat to property or lives.

The cause is unknown. Falcon, Colorado Springs and Cimarron Hills firefighters responded to the scene.
