Storm causes minor damage in La Junta

Another day of severe weather is expected after a tornado caused minor damage when it touched down briefly in Cheraw, about 10 miles north of La Junta on Colorado’s southeastern plains.

National Weather Service spokeswoman Nezette Rydell said the tornado knocked down power poles on Monday, but no injuries have been reported.

The storm caused the roof at the Wallace Oil gas station to collapse. There was also damage to the La Junta airport hangar.

Farther to the east, heavy rain flooded streets in Lamar.

The area is among those hardest hit by the drought in the West. The conditions in southeast Colorado are rated as exceptional, the most severe in the national rating system.

Rydell says people on the Front Range and the eastern plains can expect another round of severe weather on Tuesday.
