7-hour standoff ends, suspect found dead

A seven-hour standoff in Sugar City ends after the suspect is found dead in the home he barricaded himself in.

The incident started Saturday afternoon when a resident reported seeing a man who had an active warrant out for his arrest.

Crowley County Deputies tried to make contact with that man, but he ran away. While the suspect was running away, a resident reported that the suspect fired a rifle repeatedly in the resident’s direction.

The suspect then broke into a vacant home on the 300 block of California St.

Authorities set up a perimeter around the home while they tried to get the suspect in to custody.

The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team and K-9 unit, Kiowa County Sheriff’s Office, Crowley County District Attorney, Colorado State Patrol and Colorado Division of Wildlife all responded to help the Crowley County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities tried for hours to get the suspect to come out, but he did not respond. SWAT members eventually entered the home, where they found the suspect dead.

Authorities say he died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The identity of the man has not yet been released.

No one else was injured during the incident.
