Midway landfill fire under control

A fire that was burning at a landfill between Colorado Springs & Pueblo is now under control.

Hanover Fire Chief Carl Tatum told KRDO NewsChannel 13 that the fire started in the household waste section of the dump.

Employees at the landfill smothered the fire by digging up the smoldering rubbish and dumping fresh soil on it. 18,000 gallons of water was trucked in and dumped on the fire to keep it from flaring up.

Chief Tatum said the fire was likely caused by either embers from a fireplace or a grill that someone dumped in the garbage, and that it could have been smoldering for days.
