Colorado Springs Police Sergeant Arrested For Theft, Forgery

Colorado Springs Police have arrested one of their own.

53-year-old Sergeant James Butierres was arrested on charges of Felony Theft and Felony Forgery.

Neighbors of Butierres didn’t want to be identified, but said they were shocked.

Despite lights being on, no one came to Butierres’ door, but as a KRDO Newschannel 13 crew packed up to leave, a male voice yelled from the house, “Find something better to do.”

Sergeant Butierres was responsible for overseeing the department’s Motor Vehicle Theft Unit and grant funds associated with this position.

According to a news release, an investigation intoSergeant Butierres began a week ago, when an internal checks and balances within the Colorado Springs Police Department identified a possible employee theft.

As a result, a criminal investigation was initiated and probable cause was established for an arrest relating to time and labor issues and funds associated with a Motor Vehicle Theft grant.

According to Chief Peter Carey, “The arrest of an officer has an impact not only on department members, but our community as well. It will be handled in the same manner and with the same integrity as every other investigation.”

Dennis Hartley, a local defense attorney not involved with the case, said he does not think these allegations will bring back any cases Butierres was involved with.

“If they can prove that he mishandled evidence, perjured himself, or did some other kind of misconduct that would affect the presentation of the case then there is always that possibility, but under normal circumstances probably not,” said Hartley.

Mr. Butierres has been placed on Administrative Leave with pay. The case will be presented to the District Attorney’s Office for formal charges. If and when felony charges are filed, the Administrative Leave will be without pay.
