CU reiterates opposition to 4/20 pot smoke-out

University of Colorado officials say they are still adamantly opposed to a large-scale 4/20 marijuana celebration on the Boulder campus, despite the recreational use of pot being newly legal in the state.

CU officials note it’s still illegal to smoke pot in public and say the annual April 20 smoke-out disrupts academics, even though this year’s celebration would fall on a Saturday.

Last spring, university leaders shuttered the campus to outside visitors on 4/20, and Norlin Quad – which in past years drew up to 12,000 revelers – was shut down altogether. Campus officials even spread a fishy smelling fertilizer on the grass to deter crowds.

The university is expected to announce as early as this week plans to prevent the smoke-out.
