Battle over gun control goes to CO House floor

Colorado lawmakers are bracing for a long day of debate over Democratic gun bills that include expanding background checks on firearm purchases and new ammunition restrictions.

The Democratic-controlled House is scheduled to take initial votes on the bills Friday. Lawmakers are being told to prepare to be there until early Saturday.

Democrats are proposing expanding background checks to include transfers between private sellers and online purchases. They also want large-capacity magazines to be limited to 15 rounds for firearms and eight rounds for shotguns.

The measures are in response to mass shootings in Aurora and Connecticut.

Other proposals would ban concealed firearms on college campuses and require that gun purchasers pay for their own background checks.

The Senate will consider the bills next, if they pass the House.
