Pueblo man gets 45 years for killing girlfriend

A 38-year-old Pueblo man accused of stabbing his girlfriend to death and severely wounding her father has been sentenced to 45 years in prison.

The Pueblo Chieftain reports District Judge Jill Mattoon sentenced Mason James Romero on Friday for the April 12, 2012, death of 37-year-old Georgia Medina. Romero struck a deal with prosecutors and pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and first-degree assault.

Prosecutors say Romero stabbed Medina 16 times during an argument at the couple’s Pueblo home. Medina’s father says he heard his daughter scream and when he responded, Romero stabbed him as well.

The knife was bent nearly in two during the attack.
