Juvenile suspect in double-murder makes first court appearance

The suspect in the double murder of a Fort Carson soldier and his wife made his first appearance in court on Friday.

The judge read a slew of charges 17-year-old Macyo January faced; the biggest among those is two counts of first-degree murder.

During the court appearance, Deputy District Attorney Jeff Lindsey requested January’s case be moved from juvenile court to adult court. The judgedid not rule on that during Friday’s court advisement.

Lindsey told KRDO NewsChannel 13on his way out of the courtroom that the DA’s office would push to see January tried in adult court.

The judge said January would be detained until his next court appearance without bail. The reasoning was January could be a threat to himself or the community.

District Attorney Dan May told KRDO NewsChannel 13 this violent crime rocked the community.

“We see a certain amount of violence in our community, but you just don’t see random violence like this; usually there is some connection or some sort of underlying cause but when you see something random like this, it scares the community,” said May.

Police arrested January on Thursday night along with four other people with existing arrest warrants. One of the people arrested was 19-year-old Jerel Couch. He was charged with accessory to first-degree murder – not for the murder itself, but for harbouring a fugitive.

January’s next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 23.
