Explosive water bottles found on apartment grounds

Police have arrested two people after several homemade explosives were discovered at the Carefree Village Town Homes off Oro Blanco and Carefreeon Monday morning.

A maintenance worker discovered three suspicious looking water bottles outside the town homes, police said. As the man looked at the bottles, one of them exploded.

Police and hazmat crews were called to the scene to investigate. Crews found another bottle in a mailbox at a nearby home. The bottle exploded in the mailbox, scattering mail all over the ground and destroying the mailbox.

Officials describe the explosives as over-pressure devices. A mix of chemicals are poured into a bottle and the lid is screwed tight. Gas from the chemicals causes the bottles to explode. Dangers include chemical burns and injury from the bottle’s debris.

No one was injured during the incident.

Police arrested Caleb Long, 24, and Tyler Frasier, 21, on Monday. The suspects are being charged with Possession of an Explosive Device, which is a felony. They will also be charged with misdemeanor Criminal Mischief for destroying the mailbox.Management at Carefree Village tells KRDO the two men are Fort Carson soldiers.

UPDATE: Oro Blanco Drive was closed for several hours between Artistic Circle and North Carefree Circle during the investigation. The road reopened around 11:30 a.m.

Police were called back to Carefree Village around 3 p.m. when the maintenance man discovered a gallon jug full of chemicals in a trash can at the complex.

He said it was full of chlorine and aluminum and it had not yet exploded.

The fire department and police returned to remove the device.
