Colo. prosecutor: Cancer hoax may not violate law

A Colorado prosecutor says a hoax about a boy with cancer that sparked an outpouring of community sympathy may not violate the law.

Authorities are investigating a 22-year-old Avon woman who told residents the local boy was terminally ill with leukemia.

The woman has not been charged with any crime and she could not be reached for comment.

Eagle County District Attorney Mark Hurlbert said Thursday that investigators are trying to determine if the woman collected any money from the hoax.

A photo of the boy was traced back to a Kids Cancer Crusade website. He is a South African boy who is still alive.
