Light snow falls in Woodland Park

Woodland Park often is the area’s coldest and snowiest place when winter weather arrives, but that wasn’t necessarily the case on Thursday.

The town nicknamed “The City Above the Clouds” received only a dusting of snow before midnight. The most visible impact of the snow was that it covered many road and street signs along the westbound lanes of U.S. 24.

Most of the snow melted as it fell on warmer surfaces. No plowing or shoveling was noticeable. Many drivers didn’t even bother to brush snow off their windshields.

Still, Marita Landrum said winter weather is why she moved to the area from Texas.

“My only concern are the newbies,” she said of other new arrivals. “They come in with four-wheel drives and realize they can’t stop quite as fast.”

Some of the melting snow could freeze overnight, creating icy conditions for drivers during the Friday morning commute.
