USA Pro Challenge goes from Breck to Colo. Springs

A healthy crowd greeted USA Pro Challenge cyclists at the finish line of stage 5 from Breckenridge to Colorado Springs, despite an overcast sky and a few drops of rain.

Friday’s largely downhill 117.9-mile stage began with a 10-mile opening climb to Hoosier Pass at 11,500 feet. Tyler Farrar finished first. Tejay van Garderen maintained the overall lead in the race through a tiebreaker.

Twenty riders have dropped out since the race began, including seven riders who didn’t finish the fourth stage from Aspen to Beaver Creek on Thursday.

The 683-mile race continues Saturday with a stage that starts in Golden and ends in Boulder. The race will end Sunday with a short individual time trial in Denver.
