Protest over cake refusal

A cake shop owner in suburban Denver says he will continue to reject orders for gay wedding cakes.

Lakewood’s Masterpiece Cakeshop owner Jack Phillips says he turned away a couple’s cake order for religious reasons and will continue to do so despite a protest outside of his shop Saturday afternoon. The Denver Post reports that protesters waved rainbow flags and signs that read, “let them eat cake.”

David Mullins and Charlie Craig posted news of Phillips’ July 19 refusal on their Facebook page. Since then, Mullins says they have received support from every state and continent.

In a statement, the couple calls Phillips’ refusal “dehumanizing,” ”awkward,” and “painful.” The couple plans to wed in Massachusetts next month and ordered the cake for a local reception.
