Cold air funnel clouds seen over El Paso County

There were several reports of funnel clouds forming over Fountain and Fort Carson Monday morning.

Stormtracker 13 Meteorologist Marty Venticinque says those are “cold air funnel” clouds, or a variant of “scud” clouds.

Cold air and relatively high humidity levels allow for low cloud bases and turbulent airflows. Sometimes little circulations can develop that are not related to a powerful thunderstorm updrafts. The moisture condenses easily in the cool, moist air and traces out these circulations. We have no reason to believe that the cold air funnel witnessed this morning will cause any damage.
