Bear breaks into Snowmass Village cars

Wildlife officials said a bear sow with three cubs has broken into at least 14 cars in Snowmass Village since last week.

The Aspen Daily News reported wildlife officers are trying to capture the bear and cubs and move them away from where they could threaten humans.

Kevin Wright of Colorado Parks and Wildlife said drought conditions have hurt bears’ main food source of choke and serviceberry bushes.

He said the mother bear apparently learned to find food in vehicles about a week ago, when it got into a vehicle that had food inside.

Meanwhile, a young-adult male bear that had been sticking its head in tents at the Difficult campground east of Aspen has been captured and relocated to the Piceance Basin north of Rifle.
