Rape Survivor Tells Her Story

Christi Rosas said she went out for her birthday some 2 1/2 years ago to the Finish Line Bar and then later to a house party, all the while being followed by a man who would kidnap and brutally rape her later that night.

“My head was being bashed into the console, my hair was ripped out, I lost the majority of my teeth, said Rosas.

She managed to escape from Mario Alonzo Martinez, who left her with serious brain injuries. Now, she has a mission. Rosas wants people to follow their instinct. If someone makes you feel uncomfortable, don’t ignore the feeling.

“My main goal is to make sure that more people are aware of their surrounding more consistently. It matters.” said Rosas.

Helping Rosas deal with the healing process has been the group Finding Our Voices. Through painting and other creative activities, rape survivors are able to find their voices again.

Joyce Aubrey is the founder of Finding Our Voices. Aubrey is helping Rosas through her journey, and as a rape survivor herself, she knows victims can overcome their struggle.

“After rape you will never be who you were before, but you can find a new normal,” said Aubrey.

Martinez will be sentenced June 11.
