Severe Weather Season Has Arrived

The tornado outbreak near Dallas serves as a reminder that severe weather season has begun, and it is time to get prepared.

In Colorado, we typically begin seeing thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes beginning in April and the American Red Cross said that it is already preparing for whatever disasters may lie ahead.

?We really want to be proactive, rather than reactive,? said Lizabeth Jordan, director of volunteer and emergency services at the Pikes Peak chapter.

Jordan said they are currently recruiting and training volunteers, educating the public and creating partnerships.

?These partnerships are critical, having more volunteers on board is really important as well,? said Jordan.

Jordan said they are well-prepared for the upcoming season, but are always in need of donations.

?Again, those donations would certainly help in order to make sure we have supplies on hand for these types of disasters,? said Jordan.

The American Red Cross said the rest of southern Colorado should begin preparations, too.

It recommends families make a plan and know where to meet in the event cellphone coverage is limited. It recommends going over details, such as who will pick up the kids at school or who will be in charge of getting any pets.

The Red Cross also recommends making an emergency kit equipped with water, food, medications, first aid supplies, flash lights and other essentials.
