Texting Scam Phishing For Information

Just about everyone has a cell and many of those cells are smart phones, but with the new technology comes new opportunities for scammers to get a hold of the public’s personal information.

Danny Reynolds, a Cripple Creek man, said he received a text message from an unknown phone number claiming to be from Verizon with an attached website link. The message asked for Reynolds to update profile information using the attached link.

“It looks really legitimate. It looks like a legitimate message from Verizon, but the fact that it came up as unknown sender, nah,” said Reynolds, who saw past the scam.

These scams are known as “phishing scams” because scammers send out mass messages to random numbers, and then just wait for someone to bite.

Reynolds said that, for him, the easiest way to verify if the text was a scam was to call an official Verizon number.
