Colo. Springs Cycling Challenge Pushed Back

Many downtown business owners and cycling enthusiasts said they support the proposed Tour of Colorado Springs, a local bike race. One key player, Mayor Steve Bach, said he does not support the race, right now, so it?s not happening.

Owner of the Colorado Springs Bike Shop, Ed Johnson, said he was disappointed to learn the Tour of Colorado Springs would not be happening this summer.

“I’m sure that there are a lot of things to consider, but it nothing really new,” said Johnson who says the event could have happened this year.

In a meeting with city council, Bach said that he was still too concerned with liability and funding issues.

The majority of the Colorado Springs City Council spoke out in support of the Tour of Colorado Springs. Councilman Tim Leigh was one of those supporters. After Bach’s announcement, and learning more about the project, Leigh said it would be most prudent, and perhaps beneficial, to wait.

“I’ve spoken to the local organizers and some potential national sponsors who are really interested in this event. That might really elevate this to a higher level,” said Leigh.

David Whitiker, one of the race organizers, said he understands the mayor?s reservations. The event has been postponed until summer of 2013, and Whitiker also said Spectrum Marketing will continue working with the city to address Bach?s concerns and ensure the Tour of Colorado Springs does happen in 2013.
