Update: Fire Out At Springs Apartment Complex

Residents of 15 apartment units at a southwest Colorado Springs complex were evacuated during a fire Wednesday night.

The fire was reported just before 9:20 p.m. at the Cheyenne Vista Apartments on Crestone Lane. Firefighters ordered everyone in building 340, a four-story structure, to leave after smoke and flames were seen in the floors of several units.

Fire department Lt. Jeff Sievers said the fire spread in space between the second-floor ceiling and the third-story wood floors. Strong winds and one side of the complex being above a cliff, hampered firefighters’ efforts.

The fire appeared to be under control by around 10:45 p.m. Investigators will determine a cause. Initial reports indicated the fire started on a patio deck and spread across wooden walkways. Sparks from wind-blown power lines in the area also are a possible cause.

Displaced tenants were sent to building 370 where their needs for shelter and clothing were assessed. One resident said he left wearing only a T-shirt and slacks.

Firefighters said there were an unknown number of pets unaccounted for, and efforts were being made to contact the owners who may have been away when the fire started.

Siervers said more than 50 firefighters responded to the scene, said no one was injured.
