Community Gets To Pick Park For $10K Makeover

A local business has donated $10,000 to help spruce up a park in Colorado Springs. Freedom Honda has asked voters to pick the park via Facebook.

In 2010, Colorado Springs City Council voted to cut funding for maintaining city parks due to budget cuts. That meant no trash cans, no water for grass in parks and no repairs to park equipment.

Since then, some funding has been restored, but Mayor Steve Bach said our parks still need help.

“We need to reinvent everything we’re doing,” said Bach. “We’re going to have limited financial resources. At the same time, we need to maintain opportunities for our citizens to have a place to recreate and relax.”

Freedom Honda opened in Colorado Springs in October 2011 and its general manager, Bret Petersen, said it is important for businesses to be involved in their community.

The business has created a Facebook page where voters can pick the park that needs most help.

City leaders said that once a park is picked, they will use the public’s ideas on how to use the $10,000.
