Olympic Bid Could Be Costly For Denver

The Winter Olympics in Denver in 2022 would cost about $1.5 billion, most of which would have to be privately raised. That was an estimate given to Denver officials Saturday when they held their first meeting to assess the feasibility of seeking the 2022 Winter Games.

The Denver Post reported that Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper and Denver Mayor Michael Hancock were among those briefed on the mechanics of seeking a bid. An exploratory committee plans to decide within 90 days whether to wade further into seeking a bid.

The $1.5 billion estimate came from AlDem International Management Inc., a Colorado-based sports firm that assists in Olympic bids.

Denver was awarded the 1976 Winter Games, but the city later decided against hosting the event.
