Stratton Meadows Sees Rash Of Burglaries

A Springs neighborhood has become a target for thieves. Neighbors said jewelry, weapons, even Christmas presents have been taken.

A neighbor in the Stratton Meadows area, near Southgate, said the home invasions keep happening.

“I’ve heard of probably seven to 10,” said Elizabeth Murphy.

Two families on her street, Richard Avenue, have been hit in the past month. Debbie Wilson said she and her husband were only gone for an hour when a burglar made off with two antique guns, coins and heirloom jewelry.

Wilson said her mother-in-law’s wedding ring was stolen as well as a ring from her grandmother.

“I felt just awful that someone was in my house and things that were important to us were taken,” said Wilson.

Murphy contacted KRDO Newschannel 13 to get the word out to everyone in the area. She said she talked to someone down the street from her who had Christmas presents stolen, and another man in the area who was searching for his dog who ran away after a break-in.

She said she wants everyone in the area to be aware and on the look out for anyone who seems suspicious. She worries someone may be watching the neighborhood.

“I want to catch these guys,” said Murphy. “I don’t want it to happen to anybody else. It’s bad enough it’s happened as many times as it has.”

Colorado Springs police weren’t able to provide information Saturday about any trends in these break ins. Neighbors said the thieves tend to strike between about 5:30 and 7 p.m. and typically enter through back doors, often breaking glass.
