Dad Is Back: Soldier Surprises Kids At School

Veterans day is an important day for all Americans including the Franz family, but this year is extra special for them because a husband, father and soldier is finally back home.

It was a well planned surprise. The adults in the Franz family and staff at the Bear Creek Elementary School were in cahoots and invited KRDO NewsChannel13 to capture the magic.

All five Franz children attended a Veterans day event at their school and at the end of it the children were called onto the stage and asked to close their eyes. Moments later Tony Franz walked out and the shrieks and tears of joy started.

“I am probably the most excited I have ever been in my life,” said 10 year-old Charles Franz.

“I really didn’t feel anything because my mind just went blank when I saw him,” said 10-year-old, but almost 11-year-old Isabel Franz.

The family said they even called in help from out of state. Family members came out to ensure the kids were none the wiser, and so their mother could concentrate on planning the surprise.

“When they said goodbye to their dad last year on veterans day at the Denver airport, it was kind of rough and so we’ve come full circle,” said mother Theresa Franz.

Tony Franz got back home earlier than anticipated so he had to hide out until Veterans Day, but he said his patience was well worth it.

“It is always good to see them. You have to be ready though because they will jump on you and there is five of them,” said Tony Franz.

All the kids have their list of fun things they want to do with dad, and said they are grateful for the time they get with him.

“I’m just glad it’s all over. It is not a visit. He will stay here. If there ever is another deployment it will be sorrowful, but I’m just glad he is here now,” said Charles Franz.

As for what’s next, the Franz family said they plan to re-celebrate all birthdays and anniversaries missed while dad was away serving the United States of America.
