Wells Fargo Customers Targeted In Text Message Scam

A Penrose woman receives a text message Wednesday morning that looked like it was from Wells Fargo, but she quickly finds out that it was an attempt to take her money.

?It makes me feel angry that people are out there doing this to people that can’t afford to have their accounts wiped out,? said Carol Monnich.

The text message came through Wednesday morning and said that her Wells Fargo debit card needed to be reactivated.

Monnich said she called the number indicated in the text message, but it was busy. She used her debit card later that day. She called the number again later and got through. According to Monnich, an automated voice asked her to provide her card number, its expiration date, her PIN and the last four digits of her Social Security number to reactivate her debit card.

Monnich suspected it was a scam, so she provided a false card number. At the end of the call, the automated voice said her card would be reactivated.

Monnich went to her bank to find out if any of the employees knew anything about the text.

?I was the fourth one to come into the Penrose Wells Fargo branch about it,” said Monnich.

Bank employees would not talk to KRDO-TV on camera, but did confirm that some of their customers received the texts.
