Man Shot By El Paso Co. Deputies In Black Forest ID’d

Four deputies are on paid administrative leave after one of them shot and killed a man early Tuesday morning in Black Forest.

On Wednesday, the coroner identified the man as Daniel Paul Leskinen, 45, of Colorado Springs.

Deputies said they were dispatched to a home in the 6400 block of Coolwell Drive for a disturbance around 12:25 a.m Tuesday. The person who called 911 said they were involved in a fight with their father — and that he fired his gun at them.

According to deputies, the 911 calls continued over the next few hours — and whomever was calling was not cooperative with emergency dispatchers.

Around 2 a.m., deputies said they were able to pinpoint an area to begin searching for the man.

During their search, deputies say they heard a single gunshot and called for back-up.

It wasn’t until 4:30 a.m. when deputies said they made contact with a man, who was 45 years old, at a nearby property. Deputies said they could see the man with the gun and repeatedly told the man to set his gun down.

After about 20 minutes of trying to coax the man to safety, a deputy tried to use a Taser to subdue him — however, it didn’t work. Deputies say that’s when the man fired his gun at them. They returned fire.

The man was shot and died at the scene, according to the sheriff’s office.

Four deputies were involved, ranging in age from 26 to 46 years old. They’ve all been placed on routine paid administrative leave while the sheriff’s office and district attorney’s office investigate.

The man’s name has not been released until his family has been notified, the sheriff’s office said.
