Digging Out Of The Storm

COLORADO SPRINGS – New street plowing regulations state a residential street has to have six inches of snow, or more, in ordered to be plowed. On Sunday some neighborhoods had that kind of accumulation, but weren’t plowed. Streets Division workers say it was nearly impossible to get to the residential roads on Sunday. Ken Winckler is an Operations Manager for the city says, “we’re still on the primaries. we’ve had quite a bit of snow happening in a number of different places in the town, so we’ve been hitting the primaries and having to come back and re-hit the primaries again.”

Recent budget cuts leave the city with fewer resources and it will only get worse in January, twelve people will retire this year and the streets division won’t be filling those spots. Winckler says when it comes to keeping an eye on the residential streets, “our closest contact with what’s going on in the area are from our drivers. they’re out there and they know their area quite well.”

A lot of the streets division back up drivers are from the Parks Department and it’s likely those drivers will be lost at the beginning of the year.
