Fifteen New Laws Ring In New Year

PUEBLO – Fifteen new laws will go into effect January 1st, 2009. Ifyou work for minimum wage, you’re going to welcome at least one of them

The first place we thought of to check out the minimum wage issue was the Pueblo Convention Center. It’s one place in Southern Coloradothat employs people who make tips and people who don’t. Wednesday–they were getting ready for–what else? ANew Year’s Eve party.

It’s one one of the biggest parties of the year anywhere. At the Pueblo Convention Center, it’sno exception…

The general manager says they are prepared for the increase in the minimum wage:Dean Dennis relays, “we budgetedadditional money in both our part time and temporary labor, etc., , in order to be able to accommodate that after the first of the year.”

Minimum wage is going up to $7.28 from $7.02. General Manager Dennis saysat theirConvention Center, their only employees who receive tips are bartenders.

And as for other workers, “and a lot of them make more than minimum wage now anyway. I would point out that a lot of our employees make more than minimum wage, so we’re not in a position where that affects a lot of our permanent part-timers.”

The best news of all is that after a shaky end to 2008…the Pueblo Convention Center is already up in its bookings for 2009, by a hundred thousand dollars.

Also starting January 1st, new sterilization guidelines for animal shelters getting read to adopt out pets. And, tougher drunk driving penalties.
