Tuberculosis Incident Not Worrisome For International Travelers

By: Alexa Gromko

Tuberculosis is far more prevalent overseas than here in this country. But even so, summer travel– particularly to foreign destinations– is hopping right now. If anyone’s concerned.. It’s mainly to find out what they can do to protect themselves.

Travel agents haven’t had any calls expressing concerns about TB but that’s not to say travelers shouldn’t take precautions. Places like Africa, Asia, India, even Mexico have high rates of TB. But you’ll also find it in Eastern Europe, like Moldova.

There is no vaccination for TB, but concerned travelers who return from developing countries can ask their doctor or the El Paso County Health Department about the tuberculin skin test.

It’ll show whether you have the disease– not prevent you from getting it. The best advice is to stay away from crowded public places and public transportation.

One Springs resident, Greg Warnke, contracted TB in the Phillipines 20 years ago. He’s in remission and not contagious but says he’s never afraid to travel and just got back from Mexico.

And that’s what travel agents are stressing: don’t let fear of a disease that’s been around prevent you from enjoying a trip overseas. Just be aware, be cautious about what you do, and take the necessary precautions for travel to that location.
