Pueblo South football team looking to take the title in Class 3A

Pueblo South proved once again they are among the state's elite teams. The Colts returned to the state championship game last season and although they came up short against Palmer Ridge, the game is fuel for the returning players who want to finish what they started, "It was really motivating. We are all hungry for it. We all want to show that last year, it was close. We could have come through it, but we didn't. So now we want to show that we still can and we've still got that chance," says Pueblo South safety Luke Guarienti, Pueblo South linebacker, George Longoria added, "It lit a fire underneath everybody, especially everybody that's returning. That fire sits there for the summer. You know you got to get back to work, and get back to the place you want to be, and that is that place." The extra wait time caused by the pandemic didn't tone down the intensity. In fact, the Colts are hungrier, "Of course the fire grill. The fire never went down, really. Nobody's intensity ever dropped during the summer when we realized we could play in the fall or we can play in the spring, it didn't really matter to us. We knew that we had to get to work so it was a big off-season for a lot of us," says Longoria. South gets Durango right out of the gate, so they've got to come out swinging but they've got more than half their starters back and with Palmer Ridge moving up to 4A, someone has to take over as the King of Class 3A. One thing is for sure, they already have the attention of the rest of the state, "I'm just excited to see what they do. We've got a tough opponent week one. We're going to find out really quick what we're made of," says Pueblo South head coach Ryan Goddard. "Coaches, that's all they say, is that we have a target on our back. Before we made it to state, we always have a target. Everyone just wants to beat us. They've let us know that. I feel like we got a chance," says Guarienti.
