A paraplegic race car driver will compete in Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

Rob Parsons is a first time hill climb driver. He's been a part of the race before, but never as the man behind the wheel. He'll make history this Sunday, as the first paraplegic driver since 1988 to compete in the race, "I'm always trying to inspire people that are in similar situations like myself to go after something like this. It's very unconventional because not a lot of people think they can do it. The technology exists and everything exists out there as long as you put your passion and heart into it, you can do it," says Rob Parsons. His nickname is "Chairslayer". Parsons was injured in a dirt bike accident in 2011. At the time he was known as a BMX motocross rider, so now he's setting his goals high, about 14,115 feet high. He has made some changes to his car, and now he's ready to roll, "Everything for driving the car is done by my left hand. Accelerator, break, clutch, up-shift, downshift, and then I steer with my right hand. When I'm in the car, no one knows that I'm in a wheelchair. It puts everyone on the same playing field. That's where I can just kind of feel like everyone else," says Parsons. Parsons will be the first paraplegic athlete to compete on the asphalt, in a competition run, solo. His spirit is unbreakable and he has a message for anyone trying to overcome a challenge, "If you want to do something, just try it. If you fail, you learn something no matter what. But if you don't try, you didn't learn anything at all," says Parsons.
