Dr. Abram McBride here, the Men's MD. Today, I want to share a story about a patient I recently saw in my clinic that, in my opinion, represents the impact that erectile dysfunction (ED) can have on a patient and their relationship. I met a couple who had been married for almost 10 years, and he (the husband) has suffered from ED for the last 4 years. His wife, who was with him, vividly remembered how things used to be before her husband started experiencing ED. She has been very supportive of him throughout his ED treatment journey. Unfortunately, he has tried all of the medication-based treatment options, which initially or eventually failed to restore his erectile function. Simply put, the medication options didn't work for him.

At this point, he and his wife are very frustrated. He indicated that he had lost hope and wondered why he should even bother or care anymore. His wife's response was surprising. She was as interested and motivated as he was to address his ED, and not for the reason you may think. She was really concerned because she had seen the impact ED had not only on their intimacy as a couple but also on how he interacted with her, other people in his life, and their children, and how he approached his day-to-day activities and work routine. She could tell that he was not the same person he used to be and that the main reason for that was his ED, and he had lost a part of himself when his symptoms progressed.

They came to see me for a consultation, seeking a definitive treatment option that would help restore his confidence, motivation, and the way he carried himself in every aspect of his everyday life. Of course, I was very excited to meet them and work with them. From here, we will work together as a team to find a solution that works for them and get them back to being as happy as they can be together.

I've seen ED significantly impact my patients, their relationships, and their partners.
