State offering tax extensions for victims of ‘Aspen Acres’ fire

STATEWIDE, Colo. (KRDO) -- Governor Jared Polis announced the Department of Revenue (DOR) is extending the deadline for some state tax filings in response to fires burning across the state.

This includes residents and businesses in Pueblo, Custer, Ouray and Huerfano counties that are being impacted by the "Aspen Acres" fire, according to a press release.

The DOR says it is extending the deadline for income tax extensions that should have been due on Oct. 15 and sales taxes that would have been due between July 20 and Oct. 20. Those deadlines are now set for Dec. 31.

Officials say taxpayers can contact the DOR to request penalty waivers for other taxes and fees that are due in October, including marijuana, fuel and the retailer delivery fee. Taxpayers will have until Nov. 6 to file for those waivers.

The tax relief only applies to state taxes, not taxes collected by cities such as Pueblo, according to officials. The extension is also being offered to victims of other fires in which the governor has declared an emergency, including the "Gold Mountain" and "Snyder" fires.
