Heavy rain floods roads, damages bridge

Monday’s heavy rain hit the southeast side of Colorado Springs especially hard.

Charles Flemming walked outside to find fast moving water behind his house pounding the side of the bridge along Robidoux Circle.

When it was over, chunks of pavement piled on top of each other, after the pavement broke apart under the pressure of the overflowing creek.

“The actual stream was flowing over the bridge. I just thought it was a cool thing to see, but I also thought ‘I hope that doesn’t get up to my house.'”

One of his neighbors said she had lived there for 28 years and never seen the water climb so high.

Drivers did what they could to dodge patches of high water on area streets, but more than a few cars became stranded or stalled out.

The worst damage, however, may be near Palmer Park.

High water in the canal behind Tiffany Bishop’s home on Wold literally washed away some of her backyard.

Her back fence eventually slid down a cliff after the soil crumbled beneath it.

“We grabbed all the dogs and brought them inside. When I came outside, the other half of my fence was gone,” she recalled.

All she could do was sit and watch as the creek ate away her backyard inch by inch.
