Student killed in crash outside Doherty High School
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Police say a student has died in a crash outside Doherty High School.
According to a Colorado Springs District 11 spokesperson, it happened around 7:21 a.m. Wednesday near the Barnes and Austin Bluffs intersection, where Barnes meets the west parking lot of the school.
When officers with the Colorado Springs Police Department arrived at the scene, they said a Jeep was stopped in the middle of the road and a student was lying unresponsive on the crosswalk. The student did die at the scene.
Students did witness the crash.
Doherty High School closed for the day.
D11 released the following statement on the crash:
It is with great sadness we relay that one student was hit on Barnes Road and has passed away. We will release more information and a plan for the remainder of the week as soon as we are able.
The impact of this news may be very difficult for some students to hear. Please know we have crisis counselors on hand for the rest of this week to help students and staff members who need to speak with someone.

Police say this is an active investigation, but police believe the driver is at fault.
