Getting ready for fires

With the warm winds today, the fire danger is up and another Red Flag Warning is in effect.

The winds continue to be strong into the evening and the grasses and trees are dry.

The upside to the weather is that was a nice day despite the wind.

But it’s the wind that makes firefighters very nervous.

The fire danger signs at the stations around Colorado Springs are set to “high”.

Firefighters say that whether it’s houses or brush, the wind is a big part of the equation in any fire.

Lt. Brian Vaughn of the Colorado Springs Fire Department said, “How we approach a fire whether it’s in a structure or not is going to be dictated by the wind.”

Lt. Vaughn said that every station in the city has at least some wildland firefighting equipment, but that Stations Four and Nine lead the way when it comes to dealing with wildland fire danger.
